FIGURES OF NORSE MYTHOLOGY: VALKYRIES

The Valkyries are beautiful young women, mounted upon winged horses and armed with helmets and spears. They scout battlefields, selecting the bravest of slain warriors and escorting them to Valhalla. In this immense, majestic hall, ruled by Odin, these warriors (the Einherjar) fight, feast, and prepare for the oncoming battle of Ragnarok. The Valkyries are also Odin’s messengers. When they ride forth on their errands, their armor causes the lights known as Aurora Borealis.

Modern Mythology: Hestia

“Is it possible for home to be a person and not a place?”

A modern Hestia and with one glance into her eyes, you would think you were returning home. There is a fire there, in her eyes, but it holds no malice or pain, it’s flames belong on firewood, it’s warmth fogging the windows of a living room, flickering to the beat of laughter and sighs. She is felt everywhere when one is at home, let it be in another’s eyes or in the pages of a story, she is the warming of one’s heart and the widening of their soul, until one stands on top of this world, and she is the one that whispers to the people of this world that they deserve something to call their own, and to know that it will not always be beautiful. She walks the streets, especially when the light is dim, to remind the world that home will never be far from their grasp, and if they do not have one or do not know one with peace, she will show them the way to a hearth worthy of their love, let it be an arm for them to hold, a bed all their own, a story to love, or simply the wind in their hair as their skin knows the flames she holds in her eyes.

Modern Mythology: Morpheus

“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”

A modern Morpheus who breaths shadows into the hearts of men, and by the time they notice the smoke in their lungs, they are too far gone into the dream. There’s a darkness in his bones, it hangs limp on fingertips, where blood stains his fingernails and the men of this world can’t tell if it is his or their own. He only walks on this earth where shadows are seen, behind a veil of smoke, where the lines of his jaw are blurred and it can’t be known if he is real or the flicker of a lost dream, and he fades from the light like water slipping through desperate fingers. And he wishes he was more than vapor in their eyes when the days are long and he can not tell how many years it has been. The most he is known is in dreams, where his face shifts and the only aspect that resembles the god is his eyes, he appears as another human, but the darkness of his eyes are not so easily lost, but it is forgotten as he intoxicates the minds of men, blurring the lines of reality as he appears as those who were lost to this world, and whispers ideas during the dreams, and during the day, one can’t tell if what spills out of their mouths first originated on the tongue of the god, or their own hearts. He is a ghost, no longer waiting for someone to kiss his battered wings. Is it in the man or the god where reality is foreign?

Mythology Meme [9/∞]: Andromeda, a constellation and mortal woman in Greek mythology

Andromeda was the daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia of Aethiopia. Her mother boasted that she was even more beautiful than the Nereids. Poseidon, angered by Cassiopeia’s hubris, strips Andromeda naked and chains her to a rock in the ocean before sending the sea monster, Cetus, to devour her. Perseus, the winged god, sees her and falls in love, promising to save her if she will marry him. Once she is freed, the two happily marry. After Andromeda’s death, Athena placed her in the northern sky, close to Perseus and Cassiopeia, and named the constellation Andromeda after her.
